With our latest Power Platform technology, we now are able to continuously enhance our Power Wheelchairs through automatic firmware updates. This means our Power Platform equipped chairs stay up to date with improved performance, reliability, and new optimizations. Learn more about the benefits of firmware updates below.

How does an update work?

Firmware updates will happen automatically in two stages; the update will download during normal use of your wheelchair as long as it has a stable 4G connection and will install while your wheelchair is connected to the charger.

Follow the steps below to ensure a successful update:

 

Step 1: Ensure a stable 4G connection

The update requires an active 4G cellular connection to download. The wheelchair can be used normally during this download.
 
If the 4G icon 📶 is missing from the display:

  • Press and hold the menu button to access Settings
  • Navigate to Cellular
  • Turn OFF cellular for 5–10 seconds, then turn it ON again
  • Wait for the 4G icon to reappear

Step 2: Charge your wheelchair

  • Plug in the charger

  • Turn off your wheelchair 

  • Once the chair begins charging, it will automatically check if there are any firmware updates available for your Power Platform equipped chair, and start the installation process

Step 3: Firmware Update in progress

  • Once the update starts, the display or LED panel will turn on automatically

  • Do not turn off the wheelchair—the update must complete automatically

  • Warning for LED panel users: Do not attempt to use the chair or change settings during the update, as no status information will be shown

  • When the update is fully complete, the chair will turn off automatically

Step 4: Update Complete

Once the update is finished:
 
  • An envelope symbol will appear on the display when the chair is powered back on to confirm the update was successful

  • To remove the envelope symbol ✉️ after reading the message about the successful update, restart your chair by turning off the main circuit breaker at the back, waiting a few seconds, and then turning it back on

  • If the wheelchair does not have a display joystick (e.g. LED Joystick, HD Joystick), the update will still take place in the background but there won't be a visual confirmation

Does my Permobil wheelchair support over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates?

OTA updates are available for all F-Series and M-Series wheelchairs (except M1) that are equipped with Power Platform technology.

To check if your wheelchair has Power Platform, look at the serial number located on the chassis of your wheelchair.

  • Power Platform-equipped models have serial numbers starting with the following 3 digits:
    • F3 Corpus: 425
    • F5 Corpus: 483
    • F5 Corpus VS: 491
    • M3 Corpus: 428
    • M5 Corpus: 486
    • M Corpus VS: 492

If your wheelchair's serial number matches one of these, it supports OTA firmware updates.

Why should I update my Permobil wheelchair's firmware?

Is this a one-time update or will there be more?
Ongoing updates! Like modern connected devices, future improvements will be rolled out remotely. This means no need for a service visit - your wheelchair will always stay up to date.
How is the firmware update installed on my wheelchair?
When there is an update available for your wheelchair, it will start automatically when:
 
📶 It has a stable 4G connection to download the update
🔌 It is connected to a charger and switched off
🖥️ If your chair has a display joystick, you will see progress of the update on the screen
✅ After completion, an envelope symbol will appear on the display - confirming a successful update
How do I check if my wheelchair has a 4G connection?
If your wheelchair is equipped with Power Platform technology, you should see a 4G icon 📶 on the display
How do I restore my 4G connection if the symbol 📶 is missing?
  • Press and hold the menu button to access Settings.
  • Navigate to Cellular.
  • Turn OFF cellular for 5–10 seconds.
  • Turn it ON again and check if the 📶 4G icon reappears.
What happens during the update?
  • Connect your wheelchair to the charger, ensure the chair has a 4G connection and switch off the chair
  • When the update starts, the display will turn on and show “Update in Progress”
  • The screen will indicate update progress - DO NOT try to turn off the chair!
  • Once completed, the wheelchair automatically reboots.
  • After restarting, you will see an envelope icon confirming the update was successful.

What if my wheelchair does not have a display screen?
No visible confirmation? No problem!
Wheelchairs without a digital display still receive the update. However, since there is no visible confirmation, we recommend leaving the chair on the charger overnight to ensure the update installs completely.
Can I still use my wheelchair while the update is installing?
No, it's not recommended.
For the update to install successfully, your wheelchair must be connected to a charger and turned off.
How long does the update take?
15-30 minutes is the typical length of time for the update.
However, if your wheelchair is older (manufactured between 2023 and early 2024) and has never received a firmware update before - either remotely or by a service provider - it may take a bit longer.
To avoid disruptions, we recommend charging overnight while the chair is not in use.
What should I do if I experience any issues during or after the update?
While we do not expect any issues during the update sometimes unexpected things can happen.
If you experience anything unusual during or after the update, do not hesitate to contact:

What should I do if my wheelchair is not working correctly after the update?
You need to restart you wheelchair with the main circuit breaker. To do this, switch off your chair and ask someone near you to find the main circuit breaker at the back of your chair and switch it off for few seconds and then back on again. A simple reboot can often resolve minor issues.
If the issue persists, contact your service provider or Permobil Technical Support for assistance.
 
The firmware update on my chair is complete but the envelope symbol is not disappearing?
You need to restart you wheelchair with the main circuit breaker. To do this, switch off your chair and ask someone near you to find the main circuit breaker at the back of your chair and switch it off for few seconds and then back on again.
